Dear Riverdale School Families,

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we worked through developing our plan. We strongly believe it is critical for us to be open along with providing a safe learning environment for our students and staff. Research validates how necessary our services are to the health and well-being of the children in our community. The plans that we have developed are going to require flexibility and perhaps sacrifice.

Riverdale students will return to classrooms beginning September 8th. How the students return will be based on Hancock County Public Health’s Advisory System as it stands on Thursday, September 3rd. You can view our plan by clicking Riverdale Reopen Plan. Below is a brief explanation of how we will respond to each level for Hancock County.

YELLOW = Traditional with additional safety protocols.

ORANGE = Hybrid

School day will be held from 8 AM – 2 PM with 2 PM – 3 PM set aside for teachers to be available for remote learners.

Half of the student population will be in class on Mondays and Tuesdays. The other half of the student population will be in class on Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays will be remote learning only days. Each student will have three remote learning days and two in-class days each week. The return to class will be held with safety procedures and increased physical distancing to account for limiting the spread of COVID-19. These general practices are agreed to by Hancock Public Health.

To make the hybrid model work, students will be placed into two groups. We will name our groups Blue and White. “Group Blue” will attend classes on campus on Mondays and Tuesdays, while students in “Group White” will attend classes on campus Thursdays and Fridays. Every effort is being made by district staff to ensure students are assigned to groups by family/household. Group assignments will be communicated to families soon.

RED & PURPLE = Remote Learning.

In this model students will be at home while teachers are at school. Remote learning for this school year will look very different than it did in the spring. We will make every attempt to provide technology and connectivity resources for those in need.

For the middle school and high school students, teachers will instruct classes via Zoom, Google Meet, or inside of Canvas. These students are expected to log on and engage in the lessons during the school day.

The elementary side of things will look similar with daily instruction. Students will be expected to log on daily for lessons and assignments. They will be encouraged to log on during the school day. We understand this might not be possible and that is why the lessons will be available to access each afternoon/evening on Google Meet.

We will be taking daily attendance during remote learning based upon student login data.

Alternatively, families may elect to enroll their child in Riverdale’s Virtual Learning Academy, which will utilize an online curriculum through a third party that specializes in virtual learning. The VLA will provide high-quality virtual curricula for students. The virtual learning academy will replace in-person learning, will be solely online, and completely self-driven. If possible, Riverdale teachers will provide grading/feedback for the VLA.

Parents/guardians who choose to pursue this option for their student(s) will need to indicate their intent to do so by filling out an online Google form through our website or by clicking VLA Sign-Up and registering prior to August 15, 2020.

If you are unsure of what option (In person or VLA) is best for your child/family, please contact your child’s principal.
